Sol había empezado a acudir al club de lectura cuando enviudó y solo su nombre conservaba algo de luz. La cafetería donde se reunían servía un café fuerte, denso y caliente que bebía a sorbos cortos, paladeando letras y tristeza. Ya no temía que la cafeína apartara el sueño de sus pestañas. Ahora volvía a tener un compañero de alcoba: el libro que habían pactado en cada ocasión. Nunca había necesitado endulzar el café para que le resultara grato, pero ahora era tanta su amargura que un terrón no era suficiente. Poco a poco, semana tras semana, mes tras mes, llegó un día en el que se dio cuenta de que había dejado de usar edulcorante alguno. Se había vuelto a enamorar y su nuevo “amante” llenaba sus horas de historias interminables como un Sherezade de papel.

Sun had begun to attend a reading club when she became a widow and only her name retained some light. The coffee shop where they met served a strong, dense and hot coffee that she drank in short sips, tasting letters and sadness. She was no longer afraid that caffeine would move sleepiness away from her eyelashes. Now she had a bedroom companion again: the book they had agreed on each time. She had never needed to sweeteen her coffee to make it pleasant, but now her bitterness was so much that a cube was not enough. Little by little, week after week, month after month, the day came when she realized she was not using a sugar substitute any more. She had fallen in love again and her new «lover» filled her hours with endless stories like a paper Scheherazade.
